Heating and ventilation engineers install and service heating and air conditioning in large buildings like factories, schools and hospitals.

As an engineer you will need to be able to:

  • work at height and confined spaces
  • work alone or with little supervision
  • build relationships and communicate effectively with a range of people
  • read building and engineering drawings
  • understand heating control wiring and circuit diagrams/ Good colour vision to recognise colour coded wires and components
  • choose materials and equipment
  • inspect and test installations
  • diagnose and fix faults
  • write reports
  • Willingness to learn to drive if you don't already have a driving licence as much of the work will require you to drive to customers premises.

Heating and Ventilating (H&V) Systems - Level 2

Pathway 2:  Supports the role of Heating and Ventilating Installer

Pathway 3:  Supports the role of H&V Service and Maintenance Operative

Heating and Ventilating (H&V) Systems - Level 3

Pathway 2: Supports the roles of Heating and Ventilating Welder and Heating and Ventilating Engineer

Pathway 3: Supports the role ofHeating and Ventilating Service and Maintenance Engineer

Level 2:  24 months

Progression routes

Level 2

Routes include:

  • Registering on an appropriate Certification Scheme
  • Learning and assessment programmes that lead to relevant Level 3 qualifications and/or Apprenticeship (Level 3)
  • Further training into job roles such as Technician, Designer Estimator, Project Manager, Site/Workshop Supervisor/Manager, Chartered Engineer, Sales Engineer or Commercial Manager.

Level 3

Routes include:

  • registering on a relevant industry Certification Scheme
  • relevant Level 4/5 qualifications e.g. Building Services Engineering Technology & Project Management or Foundation Degree in Engineering
  • Level 6 Apprenticeships related to this field such as in Building Services Engineering Technology & Project Management

further training into such job roles as Technician, Designer Estimator, Project Manager, Site/Workshop Supervisor/Manager, Chartered Engineer, Sales Engineer or Commercial Manager.

What are the entry requirements for this pathway?

All apprenticeship pathways in Wales have entry requirements.
If you are interested in undertaking this pathway – you need to have the following entry level qualification(s);

Level 2

Although there are generally no nationally laid-down minimum entry or previous experience requirements, the following example of formal qualifications can be used as an indication of potential to progress into the apprenticeship:

Level 2: 

  • Welsh Baccalaureate Foundation Diploma
  • Completion of a 'Pathway to Apprenticeship' in Plumbing
  • GCSE grade A-D in each of the following:- a communication subject, maths and either a science or technical-based subject
  • Level 1 GNVQs in relevant vocational/technical subjects
  • Level 1 'Access to Building Services Engineering' qualification.

Level 3

Although there are generally no nationally laid-down minimum entry or previous experience requirements, the following examples  of formal qualifications can be used as an indication of potential to progress into the apprenticeship:

Level 3:

  • Welsh Baccalaureate Intermediate Diploma
  • Completion of a 'Pathway to Apprenticeship' in Plumbing

  • Level 2 GNVQs in relevant vocational/technical subjects

The Heating and Ventilating Industry would normally expect entry into Level 3 to be for those who have already completed a Foundation (Level 2) Apprenticeship in Installing Industrial and Commercial H&V Pipework Systems, or for individuals with comparable experience and knowledge.
