A youth worker is someone who uses positive relationships to engage with young people to promote their social, emotional, and personal development through informal education approaches.
As a Youth Worker you will interact with voluntary, charitable and statutory services such as youth services, education, health, social and community provisions and engage with a range of other partners and stakeholders such as funders, families, and allied professionals.
You will be also be responsible for working with young people to plan, deliver and evaluate the youth work curriculum and programmes with individuals and groups.
You may also be responsible for building management such as youth clubs and youth project premises or mobile units and be responsible for managing the operational budget of projects regardless of location and maintaining appropriate financial and other administrative records.
Since the Foundation Apprenticeship will involve working with children/young people and/or vulnerable adults all you must be willing to undergo an enhanced check through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
All new entrants to the Foundation Apprenticeship must be at least 16 years of age and must be fully aware of the purpose of youth work.
Pathway options and levels
Youth Work - Level 2
Supports the job roles of Youth Club Assistant/Assistant Youth Worker/Youth Worker/ Junior Leader/Part-time Youth Worker/Volunteer, Assistant Youth Support Worker (as specified in JNC Agreement 2012).
Youth Work- Level 3
Supports the job roles of Youth Club Leader/Youth Worker/Part-time Youth Leader/Youth Development Officer/Youth Project Officer/Deputy Leader/Part-time Senior Youth Worker/Project Worker/Youth Worker in Charge, Youth Support Worker (as specified in JNC Agreement 2012).

Progression routes
Level 2: Routes include:
- Level 3 qualifications in Youth Work Practice or Youth Work (including the level 3 Apprenticeship in Youth Work); and Level 3 qualifications in Advice and Guidance.
- Higher Education opportunities, including professional degrees and postgraduate qualifications in youth work.
- Progression through a range of other occupational pathways, including lateral progression to other level 2 qualifications in areas such as sport coaching and play work.
Level 3: Routs include:
- Progression to a range of higher level qualifications, including Level 4 qualifications, Higher Apprenticeships and Foundation Degrees.
- Higher Education opportunities, including professional degrees and postgraduate qualifications in youth work.

What are the entry requirements for this pathway?
All apprenticeship pathways in Wales have entry requirements.
If you are interested in undertaking this pathway – you need to have the following entry level qualification(s);
Level 2
Level 2: No formal entry requirements. It would be advantageous if you have undertaken some form of voluntary work in a youth work setting, prior to enrolling on the programme although this is not a prerequisite for the Foundation Apprenticeship.
Level 3
Level 3: No formal entry requirements. However, it is expected that you will have previous experience of youth work, which may have been gained through voluntary work or other employment settings, including the Foundation Apprenticeship in Youth Work (at level 2).
