During a Foundation apprenticeship (Level 2) you will train as a Technician assessing and repairing damage, restoring body and paintwork and automotive glazing on a range of light and heavy vehicles.

At Level 3 you will train as a Senior Technician or Vehicle Damage Assessor.  As a senior technician you will be repairing damage and restoring body and paintwork on a range of light and heavy vehicles whereas a Vehicle Damage Assessor will assess vehicle damage, vehicle repair methods and estimate costs. 

You will be required to perform some challenging tasks with intricacy and skill so good manual dexterity is essential. You will also be expected to handle heavy equipment and be standing for long periods throughout your working day. 

Most employers are especially interested in applicants who can demonstrate: a positive, “can do” attitude and a willingness to work hard;  good communication skills on which this Apprenticeship will build; and an understanding of the importance to the business of providing excellent customer service at all times.

Training providers and employers will use initial assessment to ensure that applicants have a fair opportunity to demonstrate their ability and to tailor programmes to meet individual needs.

  •  Foundation degree for example, in Automotive Engineering or Automotive Technology;  or onto Higher Education (HE) programmes such as MEng and BEng programmes in Automotive.

Level 2: Diploma in your chosen pathway.

Level 3: Diploma in your chosen pathway.

What are the entry requirements for this pathway?

All apprenticeship pathways in Wales have entry requirements.
If you are interested in undertaking this pathway – you need to have the following entry level qualification(s);

Level 2

Applicants may have a range of differing experiences, achievements and/or qualifications. Examples of entry requirements that employers may look for include:

  • previous work experience or employment;
  • voluntary or community based work;
  • proof of completion of non-accredited courses;
  • achievement of Awards, Certificates or Diplomas or any of the Essential Skills Wales or Wider Key Skills; 
  • achievement of Principal Learning Qualification in Retail Business which has automotive retail content, Manufacturing & Product Design or Engineering as part of the Welsh Baccalaureate;
  • Welsh Baccalaureate – any level;
  • GCSEs in English, Maths and Science.

Level 2: No specific entry requirements.

Level 3

Level 3: No specific requirements with the exception to Pathway 5. Due to the technical nature of the job of Vehicle Damage Assessor, prior knowledge and practical experience of vehicle body and paint or vehicle maintenance and repair would be an advantage, as would customer service experience or qualifications.
