If you have a keen interest in working in the road transport and the logistics sector, don’t mind spending nights away from home and are a good timekeeper then this Apprenticeship may be what you are looking for.

During your day you will be working on your own making deliveries and collections to businesses and domestic customers’ homes.  You will be away from your base most of the day and sometimes overnight. You will have responsibility for your vehicle and load and will need to keep accurate records of deliveries and returns. 

On progression to Level 3 you may have responsibility for leading a team of drivers, providing guidance and acting as a first point of contact during normal working activities.

This Apprenticeship provides flexible routes for those wishing to get into road transport and progress to a range of jobs, training and other qualifications in logistics.

Dependant to your chosen pathway, you will need to hold a car, motorbike or rigid vehicle licence and may need to be aged 18 or over.

Pathway 1: Motorcycle/Cycle Courier

Pathway 2: Van Driver

Pathway 3: Rigid Vehicle Driver

Pathway 4: Articulated/Drawbar Driver

Driving Goods Vehicles - Level 3

Supports the jobs roles of: 

Pathway 1: Van Driver -  also supports the role of Team Leader

Pathway 2: Rigid Vehicle Driver

Pathway 3: Articulated/Drawbar Driver

Pathway 4: Transporting Freight by Road (Van)

Pathway 5: Transporting Freight by Road (Rigid)

Pathway 6: Transporting Freight by Road (Articulated/Drawbar)

Progression routes

Level 2:

  • Employment
  • Foundation Apprenticeships/Apprenticeships in: Team Leading/ Traffic Office/ Logistics Operations/Driving Goods Vehicles.
  • Following further training and development:  Foundation degree in logistics/transport planning/logistics operations/ administration.

Level 3:   

  • Employment
  • Higher Apprenticeships in Management/Purchasing and Supply Management.
  • Following further training and development: Foundation degree in logistics, transport planning, logistics operations and administration.
  • Higher Education programmes such as Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Business and Management.

Qualifications

Level 2: Certificate in chosen pathway.

Level 3: Diploma in chosen pathway.

What are the entry requirements for this pathway?

All apprenticeship pathways in Wales have entry requirements.
If you are interested in undertaking this pathway – you need to have the following entry level qualification(s);

Level 2

Applicants may come from a range of routes including:

  • work or work experience
  • training and/or experience which could include a portfolio showing what they have done any of the Essential Skills or Wider Key Skills
  • The Welsh Baccalaureate, including the Principal Learning Qualification for Retail Business which includes logistics and the supply chain vocational or academic qualification(s).

Level 2: 

Pathway 1: MUST hold a Category A (Motorcycle) Licence to undertake the Motorcycle option as this is not funded as part of this framework.

Pathway 2: MUST hold a Category B (Car) Licence as this is not funded as part of the Framework.

Pathway 3:  MUST hold a Category B (Car) Licence and be aged 18 or over.

Pathway 4: MUST hold a minimum of a Category C (Rigid Vehicle Licence) to be able to begin LGV training.

Level 3

Level 3:

Pathway 1:  MUST hold a Category B (Car) Licence as not funded as part of the framework.

Pathway 2: MUST hold a Full Category B (Car) Licence as will not be able to undertake LGV training and be aged 18 or over.  

Pathway 3:  MUST hold a minimum of a Full Category C (Rigid Vehicle Licence) to be able to commence the additional LGV training.

Pathway 4: Must hold a Category B (Car) Licence as this is not funded as part of the framework.

Pathway 5: MUST hold a Full Category B (Car) Licence as they will not be able to undertake LGV training and must be aged 18 or over.

Pathway 6: MUST hold a minimum of a Full Category C (Rigid Vehicle Licence) as will not be able to commence the additional LGV training.
