The Power Sector covers the activities associated with the generation, national transmission and local distribution of electricity, up to, and including, the customer's meter.

Individuals with the following characteristics and attributes are likely to be suitable for this Apprenticeship:

  • Electricity can be dangerous if not handled correctly so your safety, work colleagues and the public are of the up most importance in this job. You must be very safety conscious and have a very responsible attitude to work.
  • Overhead Linesworkers and Wind Turbine Engineers will be working at heights so individuals with a fear of heights would not be suited to these roles.
  • Potentially all wind turbine engineers could work offshore and spend significant periods at sea so applicants for these roles should be prepared to consider this if required.
  • A Good basic level of fitness is important to be able to conduct the job efficiently due to lifting and bending as part of the job.
  • Prepared to work outdoors in any kind of weather.
  • God practical skills for handling tools and instruments and be prepared for some hard work. These are very skilled jobs and some aspects require significant amounts of concentration.
  • Travel and 24/7 availability for emergency work.
  • Hold a driving licence (desirable).   
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work alone as well as part if a team.  
  • Cable core identification is often coloured and in these circumstances correct colour vision is important. If potential applicants are concerned about colour blindness they should discuss this with the recruiting employer to identify any reasonable adjustments that can be made.
  • Some of these job roles will involve working in confined spaces.
  • Apprentices will need a keen interest in the Power Sector and in mechanical/electrical/physical equipment and networks.

Pathway options and levels

Power Sector- Level 2

Pathway 1: Supports the job roles of Linesperson, Electrical Fitter and Cable Jointer.

Power Sector - Level 3

Pathway 1: Supports the job role of Wind Turbine Apprentice Technician.

Pathway 2: Supports the job roles of Craftsperson/Fitter – Electrical, Craftsperson/Fitter – Mechanical, Craftsperson/Fitter - Electrical + Mechanical, Craftsperson/Fitter - Control + Instrumentation and Craftsperson/Fitter - Electrical + Control + Instrumentation.

Pathway 3: Supports the job roles of Technician, Linesperson, Cable Joiner and Electrical Fitter.

Pathway 4: Supports the job role of Wind Turbine Apprentice - Installation & Commissioning.

  • Vertical progression such as: Apprentice Technician – Trainee Technician – Competent Technician/Technician - Authorised Technician – Trainee Site Supervisor – Site Supervisor – Senior Site Supervisor.
  • Foundation Degrees.

Qualifications

Level 2: City & Guilds Diploma in Electrical Power Engineering

Level 3: NVQ Diploma in Electrical Power Engineering in chosen pathway.

What are the entry requirements for this pathway?

All apprenticeship pathways in Wales have entry requirements.
If you are interested in undertaking this pathway – you need to have the following entry level qualification(s);

Level 3

Level 2: No formal entry requirements. 

Level 3

Level 3: No formal entry requirements for pathways 2/3.

Pathway 1/4: In additional to the general framework entry requirements, employers would expect apprentices to hold a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations (QCF) prior to commencing the Apprenticeship. Learners without this qualification are not excluded from the Apprenticeship, but would expected to complete it as an additional employer requirement of the framework.
