About the apprenticeship

Duties

Under the guidance and supervision of suitably trained staff, the apprentice will develop skills and abilities in, and assist the various departments with:

1. To complete the Apprenticeship Framework and undertake any other training relevant to the role including coaching from a supervisor and on the job training.
2. To sign a learning contract with the training provider/college and adhere to the agreement.
3. To attend and take part in regular team meetings and regular reviews with line manager etc.
4. To assist with inspecting, verifying and agreeing the level of work eligible for Grant award.
5. To assist with vetting plans for varying Building Regulation applications.
6. To carry out inspections under the guidance of a qualified Building Control Officer to ensure compliance with the Building Regulations.
7. To assist in the preparation of specifications and quantified schedule of works for Grants.
8. To carry out inspecting works in progress to check standard of workmanship under the supervision of qualified surveyors.
9. To verify and agree levels of unforeseen work under the guidance of qualified staff.
10. To inspect, valuate and verify interim and final payments under the supervision of qualified Surveyors.
11. To deal with enquiries from Community Care, external partners, applicants and the general public
12. To ensure a high quality customer service is maintained.

Who We’re Looking For
The Housing Grant and Building Control Team are looking for an Apprentice Building Surveyor to assist the Grants Surveyors and Building Control Officers to carry out on-site inspections, scheduling grant aided work, authorising valuation payments, vetting plans and carry out inspections under the guidance of a qualified Building Control Officer to ensure compliance with the Building Regulations for varying types of construction projects throughout RCT.

The successful candidate will need to be enthusiastic and motivated, possess excellent teamwork skills and have high attention to detail.

Entry Requirements
The applicant must possess 5 GCSE’s at A-C grade including Maths, English and a Science based subject or equivalent

What Will You Study?
As part of this Apprenticeship, depending on your qualifications you already have, you will either complete a Level 3 QCF in Construction & the Built Environment (Building Surveying) in a local College or enrol in USW to complete a Degree Apprenticeship in Building Surveying.

What will you be paid?
This is a fixed term post for a two-year period and will start in September 2024. You will be paid National Minimum Wage dependent on age:

• 21 & over £11.42
• 18 - 20 £8.60
• Under 18 £6.40

Due to the Apprenticeship entry criteria, applications cannot be accepted from any applicant who has already gained a similar qualification as the role applied for.

For example, if you have a degree in Civil Engineering you will not be eligible to apply for a Civil Engineering apprenticeship post. However, you could apply for any other apprenticeship post. Any such applications will not be considered.

Requirements

Skills

No direct experience required for this role but a genuine interest to develop skills and experience in this area of work is essential.
5 GCSE's at A-C grade including Maths, English and Science or equivalent.
A Levels.
Confident using IT (for example: email and word processing). Understanding of Council services.
Relevant office-based experience, inputting and retrieving data from computer-based systems.
Committed and motivated to personal development.
Able to complete tasks in agreed timeframes and work to deadlines.
Ability to work as part of a team.
Good communication and interpersonal skills, both verbally and written.
Able to follow a structured training programme.
