About the apprenticeship

Duties

Under the guidance and supervision of suitably trained staff, you, the apprentice will develop skills and abilities in, and assist the department with:

Attending and taking part in regular team meetings and regular reviews with line manager etc.

Carry out on-site works with a qualified Engineer.

Providing excellent customer service when dealing with routine telephone and face to face enquiries with internal and external customers / clients of the service.

Support existing teams of inspectors, technicians and engineers in development and managing projects and services in traffic and civil engineering.

Providing high quality support to the service area to include undertaking word processing, spreadsheets and other relevant ICT based tasks.

Support the administration of projects, including maintaining records.

Working in a professional manner and portray a positive image of the Council in the workplace.

Attending meetings, events when required.

Undertaking any other duties, as outlined in the specific requirements of the role.

To complete the Apprenticeship Framework and undertake any other training relevant to the role including coaching from a supervisor and on the job training.

Who We’re Looking For
The Highways Technical Services and Strategic Projects Sections are responsible for the appraisal, design, construction, supervision and project management of a wide variety of exciting and challenging projects, including reclamation, drainage, ground stability, contaminated land, transportation, traffic management, highway structures and other highway related projects.

We are seeking to appoint two Civil Engineering Apprentices to join our teams within Traffic and Strategic Projects. The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills, be well organised and able to work in a team.

This is a wonderful opportunity to join our growing team, receiving ‘on the job training’ working on a wide range of civil engineering projects across the Borough whilst being mentored and supported by experienced engineers to enhance career development during the apprenticeship period.

Entry Requirements
The applicant must possess 5 GCSE’s at A-C grade including Maths, English and a Science based subject or equivalent.

What Will You Study?
Depending on what qualification you have, all Apprentices will be supported to complete either a QCF (Qualification Credit Framework) qualification in Construction & the Built Environment, Level 3 via a local college or a Degree Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering via USW.

What will you be paid?
This is a fixed term post for a two-year period and will start in September 2024. You will be paid National Minimum Wage dependent on age:

• 21 & over £11.42
• 18 - 20 £8.60
• Under 18 £6.40

Due to the Apprenticeship entry criteria, applications cannot be accepted from any applicant who has already gained a similar qualification.

For example, if you have a degree in Civil Engineering you will not be eligible to apply for a Civil Engineering apprenticeship post. However, you could apply for any other apprenticeship post. Any such applications will not be considered.

Requirements

Skills

Knowledge of civil engineering including construction, design and project management.
An understanding of Health and Safety.
Show an aptitude towards software-based engineering and drawing e.g. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and other similar 3D software.
Experience of working within a civil/municipal/environmental engineering environment or discipline.
Able to complete tasks in agreed timeframes and work to deadlines.
Ability to think in a methodical way to design, plan and organise parts of projects.

Qualifications

5 GCSE's at A-C grade including Maths, Science and English.

Commitment to work towards a qualification required for the post.

Confident using IT (for example: email and word processing)
